Ahhh to be young, rich ...and have emphysema! That's Amy Winehouse's new tagline. The five-time Grammy winner has been diagnosed with the serious lung disorder.
Last week Winehouse, 24, once a promising singer on the rise, collapsed while at her London flat. After numerous tests and days in the hospital the bee-hived singer, whose husband is in prison for obscuring the path of justice, was diagnosed with the chest infection...which I remember being taught about in 7th grade health class...
Teacher: Okay class. Wanna know what's it like to have emphysema?
Class: YEAHHH!!!!
Teacher: Ok. Everyone take one breath in and don't release it. And then take another breath in on top of that and another and another... without letting go of the previous ones. That's what's it like to have emphysema.
Kid In Back Row: (passes out)
"She's got emphysema," Winehouse's father Mitch confirmed to the Sunday Mirror. His own mother and Winehouse's grandmother died of lung cancer. "It's in its early stages, but had it gone on for another month they painted a very vivid picture of her sitting there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe. To think this could be my beautiful 24-year-old daughter's life is preposterous. But if drugs mean more to her than breathing properly, then so be it. But the doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her. It's been a tough week."
"With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up," he added. "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She's got 70 per cent lung capacity."
There is no word on how this diagnosis will affect Winehouse's singing career. She is scheduled to play Glastonbury, one of the world's biggest music festival's, this weekend. According to Winehouse's father, "The doctors have said that medically there isn't any reason why she can't do Glastonbury."
A biopsy might need to be done for further examination of the lump in his daughter's chest. So far it has been detected as not cancerous.
Winehouse's dad also put it on paper that he doesn't want his little girl "hanging out with her mates like Pete Doherty. What hope does she have if people are taking drugs around her?"
You know that saying? "A little crack never hurt anyone." Yeah, neither do I.

it's disappointing to see someone behave this way.
i don't think she has any hope, regardless of how much i wish she'd grow up & take care of herself.
she obviously enjoys the life she leads, & she'll enjoy herself all the way into the dirt.

This is sad news. Having loved an addict who did finally turn his life around four years ago, I do have hope.

SHE'S A FRIGGIN' SHIPWRECK! ( cue music: Nearer My God To Thee )

wow, 24 and she has emphysema. at 19 (and a smoker) I am going to quit. I alwys assumed that emphysema was a 'Gramps' disease. Hearing about somone so close to my age getting a serious affliction like this has relly made me rethink sme of my recreational activities.
Thank You Charley

Let's not forget - her husband is in prison awaiting sentence for inflicting a savage beating on a pub landlord, resulting in a number of broken bones, followed by offering him £200,000 ($400,000) to "disappear" to Spain and derail the trial.
I suspect that it will be some years before he sees the outside world again.

At age 63 or so (2004), Dave Swarbrick, long-time Fairport Convention fiddler, had to have a double lung transplant due to severe emphysema. (Due, i have heard, to heavy smoking for many years.)
Swarb is on the road again, seemingly none the worse for wear.
So there may be hope for Amy yet.
Provided, of course, that she suffers a sudden rush of brains to the head from whatever alternative part of her anatomy in which they currently reside.
(Of course, for reasons unnown to me, though i was aware of the story, The Daily Telegraph published his obituary on 20 April, 1999...)

Her face looks about gramps' age too.
I remember learning about ephysema too. The health teacher had us all put a short straw in our mouths and plug our noses. No one passed out though.
My Trusted MOGs
the straw method is a good lesson too, brittany. when i was whipping this story out i was really thinking that it was physically impossible for someone that young to get emphysema...on the bright side she may have a shot for the Guinness World Book of records

She looks like she fell outta the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down!
My Trusted MOGs
yes, way to look at the bright side!

TREND- I'm glad I coudl help you see the light!

I guess neither youth or fame are all they’re cracked up to be--She may be a lot of things, talented is high on the list, maybe this will be her "gift of desperation"

My grandmother died of emphysema so I know how this illness works from witnessing my grandmother's demise from it.
Unfortunately, my grandmother did not smoke but she worked around chemicals (hair dresser) that caused her to have this deadly disease.
It is unfortunate that Amy's health has gone down the tubes but she had the power to take control of her health. I guess she has a death wish because look at this:

It is disappointing to see someone beehive this way...
In all honesty, I'm a little tired if hearing about the sticks & bones we call, "Winehouse." Nothing good is ever said about her. Her makeup is god-awful, just like her "music".
Get well, Amy.

i hope she doesn't die before she can record a second album, what a shame~
My Trusted MOGs
Back to Black was her second album, alisa. Her first, Frank, came out in 2003, pre-tats, pre-crack, pre-etc.
The emphysema is a shame, but, on the bright side, she can now sing with Wheezer, um, Weezer...

woah dis! well.. i hope she can make it to three then...
