MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(45)

Those who read my previous post may recall that I was trying to create a mix CD, where track 1 would be the first track from its album, track 2 is the second track on its album, track 3 the third, et cetera. Oh yes, all are from albums released this year (or as Heath astutely noted, that will be released this year). In fact, the impetus for last night's post was that I had found that at least a dozen songs that rank among my favorites this year were all track 2's.

Well, I burst through all the challenges and finished the mix. I got all the way to track 13 before I had to stop. There just weren't any track 14's that intrigued me. Oh well.

So, what's the listing, I hear you ask? Without further ado:

Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm Fields - Charming The Flames Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Weapon of Choice Interpol - The Heinrich Maneuver Bloc Party - Secrets Editors - The Racing Rats UNKLE w/Ian Astbury - Burn My Shadow The Cinematics - Keep Forgetting Delorentos - Waiting Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag UNKLE - Morning Rage Justice - One Minute To Midnight Film School - What I Meant To Say

In order to get the CD close to 80 minutes, I started back over and added these:

The Noisettes - Don't Give Up Battles - Atlas Feist - My Moon My Man The Bravery - Every Word Is A Knife In My Ear VHS Or Beta - Burn It All Down New Young Pony Club - The Get Go Maps - To The Sky

Care to put your own playlist together in like manner? Share it here!

Not sure how to do it? I could help, if you use Winamp or Media Monkey, but I'd be useless with iTunes.

My track 2 (yeah, thanks a lot Erin):

My track 9 (yeah, you too Lizzie):

Aww, I missed you too Lucy. Yes, I suppose I could have gone ti LJ and read your musings there, but I didn't. You're one of my main sources for beauty on the MOG. It appears that I mis-explained the mix; track 1 is the first track on its album, track 2 is the second track on its album, track 3 the third, et cetera. Oh yes, all are from albums released this year (or as Heath astutely noted, that will be released this year).

Dale you have inspired me. Before you post number 3 songs I just have to say that all time 3rd track on an album is "Number 3" by They Might Be Giants.

Oh, cool album, I'll put those songs in a playlist and play it like that. :) First gotta download a few though, don't have all the albums. Didn't know Fields, for example, but that song sounds very nice.

I'm gonna give it a go. Something to do during my recent insomnia spell. :P

But come to think of it, I don't know if I've got enough albums of this year to go through with it. :S We'll see. :P

Uh Sam, these aren't all opening tracks. I edited the post so it makes more sense.

Go for it Stef, and include earlier albums if you like. It was kinda fun, in a geeky way.

Thanks for the new blog address Lucy, I'll add to my favorites.

So remorseless, Erin; fo' shame! ;)

I forgot, that you EMCD'd Cinematics on me, so all three sisters are represented on the mix. Now I feel all warm and fuzzy.

This is SUCH a great idea for a mixed CD! I think I'll take a hand at this!

Track 2s have a knack for being favorites/first singles. It's a good way to construct an album from a marketing point-of-view.

Great mix!

Tim just got that UNKLE album and he played it for me the other day, and I loved it! I might have to hide it from him for a bit and keep it for myself :)

Agreed David, yesterday's post found a treasure trove of track 2's that stop me dead.

Do it, Andrea! The UNKLE album is blowing my mind!

I've kind of done this before. I've made mixes with all first tracks on it, and another with second tracks, and so on. Every time I make a mix, I always put one song in it's natural sequence. But I've never done a whole mix like that, maybe I'll try it.

I don't have much selection when it comes to track 15 and beyond, so I stopped. It's around 58 minutes long.

I didn't have enough to do this as well as I liked but here goes:

1. Ruby - Kaiser Chiefs 2. Mistaken for Strangers - The National 3. Fire It Up - Modest Mouse 4. That's the Way (My Love Is) - Smashing Pumpkins 5. Rot In Hell - Nekromantix 6. Starz - Smashing Pumpkins 7. Carpe Diem - Authority Zero 8. Oh Yeah - The Cliks 9. 12:34 - Authority Zero 10. Everybody Get Moving - Get Set Go.

Also, I'm digging that Delorentos track, they are going on my list.

Bgfoot, you are a brave man. If I tried to do this with my entire collection, I would get a brain cramp the size of Memphis. Great mix!

I see that AZ and SP both snuck in your mix twice. I take it that you like Zeitgeist? I haven't given it a fair shake, to be honest.

You got me there. I just tried for the past 45 min. or so and still had gaps. Hmm...maybe I'll try again later. But I really like the idea of it, very original I think!

Nah Dale, that way it's not only fun, but useful too, as you get to see what has come out in 2007 that is worthwhile. :)

1. Interpol- Pioneers to the Falls 2. Modest Mouse- Dashboard 3. You Say Party! We Say Die!- Opportunity 4. The Thrills- Restaurant 5. Editors- When Anger Shows 6. The National- Slow Show 7. Sondre Lerche- John, Let Me Go 8. The Rakes- When Tom Cruise Cries 9. Kaiser Chiefs- Everything is Average Nowadays 10. The Cinematics- Maybe Someday 11. Goodbooks- Turn it Back 12. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- American X 13. The White Stripes- Effect and Cause

(and back to 1 again) 14. 1990s- You Made Me Like It 15. Air Traffic- Charlotte 16. UNKLE- Hold my Hand 17. Mumm-Ra- She's Got You High 18. Spoon- Rhythm and Soul
