Have You Noticed?

That since The Arcade Fire broke huge in late 2004, lots of bands have incorporated group shout-along vocals? Besides The Polyphonic Spree and Cloud Cult, who might you add to that list?

At last I've replaced my copy of "The Beginning Stages of..The Polyphonic Spree." I had a copy a while back and then had a hard drive go wonky and when reloading iTunes from the backup one of the disks was bad and I lost several things. If you've never heard them, I'll give you some idea what they're like. Imagine ELO with a chorus and a theremin and throw in the flute from Jethro Tull and you've got some idea of what they are like. Oh, and then add some ambient track... MORE

Okay, now I'm sick of winter

Artist:
Album:
Track: Light and Day/ Reach for the Sun
(84)
Blog post image preview Earlier this year, I was complaining that we never seem to have the winters I remember from my childhood. High snowbanks, long cold snaps, the chance to go tobogganing or skate on a frozen pond.Well Cinderfella, my wish appears to have been answered. It started late, but this damn winter doesn't seem to want to stop. The snow just keeps coming, the snowbanks keep growing higher and my patience is wearing thin.I need to listen to happy music now, which is why I dragged out... New Polyphonic Spree Video, "We Crawl"

Free music video of We Crawl (8)
This week Austin-based collective the Polyphonic Spree released the video for “We Crawl,” another track off their latest album The Fragile Army. The video was directed by indie filmmaker Dante Harper and shows a very personal and close look at the cloaked ensemble.

Polyphonic Spree Rocks the Vic

Artist:
Other Tags: Rooney Chicago Lollapalooza Redwalls
Blog post image preview My wife and I caught The Spree this past week at the Vic in Chicago. The show started at 6:30 and We didn't get there until like 7:30. Unfortunately we missed the Redwalls who are some local fellas that grew up in Deerfield (a northern suburb). Even more unfortunately we made most of Rooney's set. Sometimes (this being one of them) I pretend to imagine how bands meet and decide that they are gong to tour together. The Spree a 26+ power rock pop ochestration seemed an ... MORE

Rockin' the MLS House?

So You Ain't No Picasso picked up on the theme song for MLS team FC Dallas - by the Polyphonic Spree. Indeedy. I decided to stroll on over to the Adidas/MLS represent site to see if there were other similarly inspired choices... ...well. The NY Red Bulls just got a re-jiggered version of The Rapture's "Whoo! Alight..." with some pathetic "Go New York! Go New York!" cheering at the start. Never mind they're still playing in Joisey. Sweet 'lil sisters Meg and Dia p... MORE

The Polyphonic Spree are better live than they are on album

(37)
And I didn't think that was possible. Saw this show back in July. But, I'm trying to fill in my entire summer. So. You know. Bare with me. I don't know if I can fully ever encompass how fantastic that night was. The Polyphonic Spree is a band that my friend Melissa introduced me to, what? 5 months ago, maybe?, and, we're all so glad she did. Brooke and I saw them tonight. Oh man. Soooooooo good. And it's happy. Talk about a 100% guaranteed pick me up! (click for the... MORE

A Lollapalooza look back

Artist:
Album:

Free music video of Lithium (4)
Blog post image preview Finally throwing my two cents in on the big Chicago festival. It was a great long weekend with some truly magical musical moments. The first was early Friday when the Polyphonic Spree and their attack of warmth and loved filled Grant Park. An amazing thing to see live, if you ever get the chance to, check them out! Tim Delaughter and his band even have a way of making Kurt Cobain lyrics sound hopeful...their cover of Nirvana's Lithium was jaw dropping. Saturday belonge... MORE

Blog post image preview I have never listened to this band, but today I stumbled on this link - http://hollywoodrecords.go.com/polyphonicspree/questfortherest/ A fun little game where you solve the puzzles of how to lead the little robe clad crew through 4 fantasy scenes to the tune of different PS songs from their 2004 set "Together We're Heavy". On the final page, there are links to a video for "Cane" and a couple other live tracks. I can't swear to you that those links work, because my ser... MORE

I'm not gonna crack

Artist:

Blog post image preview What a week! First Crowded House, then the Polyphonic Spree. I had only glimpsed this 20+ piece rock orchestra once before, at Coachella years ago, when they were still wearing their Godspell-style white robes and mostly singing songs about the sun and how reaching for it made them smile. I caught maybe the last five minutes of that show and was like, "What the hell?" I got their first album, loved it, then heard their second album and totally lost interest. The gimmick wa... MORE

The Polyphonic Spree @ Toronto

(35)
Blog post image preview After the drug overdose of guitarist Wes Berggren brought Tripping Daisy to an end, Tim DeLaughter (vocals, guitar) and the other remaining band members decided to explore the idea of creating a symphonic rock band, an idea that resulted in The Polyphonic Spree. Now on their third full-length album entitled The Fragile Army, they are touring North America, an impressive feat of logistics given that I counted 23 people on stage last Thursday night. On previous tours the... MORE
