At last I've replaced my copy of "The Beginning Stages of..The Polyphonic Spree." I had a copy a while back and then had a hard drive go wonky and when reloading iTunes from the backup one of the disks was bad and I lost several things. If you've never heard them, I'll give you some idea what they're like. Imagine ELO with a chorus and a theremin and throw in the flute from Jethro Tull and you've got some idea of what they are like. Earlier this year, I was complaining that we never seem to have the winters I remember from my childhood. High snowbanks, long cold snaps, the chance to go tobogganing or skate on a frozen pond.Well Cinderfella, my wish appears to have been answered. This week Austin-based collective the Polyphonic Spree released the video for “We Crawl,” another track off their latest album The Fragile Army. The video was directed by indie filmmaker Dante Harper and shows a very personal and close look at the cloaked ensemble.

My wife and I caught The Spree this past week at the Vic in Chicago. The show started at 6:30 and We didn't get there until like 7:30. Unfortunately we missed the Redwalls who are some local fellas that grew up in Deerfield (a northern suburb). Even more unfortunately we made most of Rooney's set. So You Ain't No Picasso picked up on the theme song for MLS team FC Dallas - by the Polyphonic Spree. Indeedy. I decided to stroll on over to the Adidas/MLS represent site to see if there were other similarly inspired choices... ...well. The NY Red Bulls just got a re-jiggered version of The Rapture's "Whoo! And I didn't think that was possible. Saw this show back in July. But, I'm trying to fill in my entire summer. So. You know. Bare with me. I don't know if I can fully ever encompass how fantastic that night was. Finally throwing my two cents in on the big Chicago festival. It was a great long weekend with some truly magical musical moments. The first was early Friday when the Polyphonic Spree and their attack of warmth and loved filled Grant Park. An amazing thing to see live, if you ever get the chance to, check them out! Tim Delaughter and his band even have a way of making Kurt Cobain lyrics sound hopeful...their cover of Nirvana's Lithium was jaw dropping. Saturday belonge... MORE

What a week! First Crowded House, then the Polyphonic Spree. I had only glimpsed this 20+ piece rock orchestra once before, at Coachella years ago, when they were still wearing their Godspell-style white robes and mostly singing songs about the sun and how reaching for it made them smile.
