MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Celine Dion is responsible for the world's worst cover version, a poll of music experts has decided.

The Canadian star's rendition of the AC/DC track "You Shook Me All Night Long" was given the dubious honor in the Total Guitar magazine survey. Dion, who performed the song at a Las Vegas concert six years ago, never released the track.

Oh yes, there is a video to put you though(below).

On the flip side,  the best cover versions were also noted, with Jimi Hendrix's performance of the Bob Dylan song All Along the Watchtower top of the list. The Beatles' rendition of Twist and Shout came in second place, followed by the Guns N' Roses version of the Wings' song Live and Let Die.

Cover songs.. an interesting debate on that.  There are musicians that can totally interpret a song and get it right.  I really can't stand some of the remakes of cover songs.  I guess I just love the original!

GNR mastered the art of the cover song but Axl and Sebastian Bach's Aerosmith cover of Back in the Saddle is pretty horrific. Probably not the worst, but first that came to my head. It's good for a headache.

I'm sorry to say it, but in my opinion, anything done to an AC/DC song - up to an including burning the CD - is an improvement.

Hmmm. Something i see in a comment makes me think i need to do a post about Big Daddy...

Speaking of which, check out this Big Daddy cover...

i can't believe ac/dc let her play that.  i blame them for that monstrocity.  the record company has to approve all covers for royalty purposes.  when ac/dc got a check from celine they should've rioted.

Well, I'm not definitely not Hendrix the Beatles or, for that matter, Guns 'n Roses, but i'm DEFINITELY not Celine Dion!

Doing a CD of covers was a risky endeavor, as well as taking a bunch of songs and people that already have tons of fans to go places they haven't gone before.  i'm not a fan of covers that are basically the same as the originals, and there's WAY too many of those, so i didn't go there either.  Luckily, the response has been great.  it was definitely fun.  couldn't insert a link here, but there's stuff on robindanar.com.

I don't believe there is approval needed for live covers.

Yes, you have to pay royalties, but BMI and/or ASCAP take care of that.

Certainly, unless the law has changed since i last knew about it, recording someone else's song was basically automatically allowed, and the only reason to negotiate with the rights-hol;der (not the label, unless th artist has signed her publishing over to the label) was yo try to neotiate a lower rate the then statuorily-fixed "Mechanical royalties".

Actually, Celine Dion's version is not listed as the worst; that honor goes to Bob Dylan's version of Van Morrison's "And It Stoned Me." What amazed me about the list is that it missed the greatest of all cover travesties: Natalie Merchant's perfectly awful, bloodless, soulless, emotionless, empty and just downright stupid cover of the Patti Smith/Bruce Springsteen classic "Because the Night."

I don't know, I got a copy of Mojo Nixon really screwing up Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks"... it's horrible.

Thats Anna Glypta isnt it?  No Anastasia, Anathama ..sounds alright to me,she's drowning out Celine... The music is identical..i think this is a bit of an anal muso poll..What were the criteria anyway? Worst cover is somebody i dont like doing a song by somebody i DO?  Where did  "Youre the one that i want" by Mullard and Baker?.. Rolf Harris's "Stairway to Heaven" or William Shatners "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" ...come?  Or ,are they "comedy" records? "So bad they're good records"?..Personal hated cover is "The Tourists" (they became "the Eurythmics" ) version of my beloved Dusty Springfield's " I only want to be with you"..the way they punked it up slightly and made a nonsense of the perfectly syntactical last line makes me fume everytime.
