Artist: Album: Mise en scène Track:

First up, I should say right up front, I'm pretty biased. I did the album cover for Built For The Sea's new EP, "Mise en scene" (used as a film term, translated from French to mean "putting on stage"...  Here's the front...

...and here's the back cover....

.

...having dispensed with that... Please give 'em a listen. I was honored to do the artwork because their music is so damn good.

It's been a couple of years since their self-titled debut... and the wait was worth it.

Singer/keyboardist/guitarist Lia Rose has done herself proud with the music and wonderful band. I've posted the opening cut from this five-song EP. If you're looking for comparisons I'll throw out the usual Radiohead, Mazzy Star, early 10,000 Maniacs will do... but just listen to the music. I checked out the band last night at their CD Release party at Slim's in San Francisco. The musicianship was top-notch, blending seamlessly with Rose's haunting voice. Lead guitarist Jon Latimer pours waves of sound onto excellent rhythms anchored by drummer Eric Kuhn (not a wasted beat in the set) and bassist Daniel McKenzie. To top it off, Michael Fecskes adds a perfect touch to the expansive sound with his cello. ...but just listen...

They're going to do a small tour of Europe (Holland for sure, but after that, I'm not sure), but if you're stateside, make sure you catch 'em when they play in your area....

I'll also post a song in the comments from their debut...

I've posted this song before, but it's well worth a second listen... or a first if you've never heard it before...  I can't get enough of it...

Artist: Album: Daytrotter Sessions Track: ...Weird

Hey gang...

I'm currently working on a poster for one of my favorite bands, Menomena. They're simply brilliant. (if you don't have their latest, "Friend And Foe", why not? It's worth it just for the album cover... the music makes it spectacular. ...and they're playing The Independent in San Francisco this Saturday...

...so... I'm trying to decide between posters... I've finished one, but I'm trying out another one... Which do you prefer? (keeping in mind I haven't finished the one with faces on it... it's going to be covered with faces...) So we're talking about the general idea here... haven't put type on the other one yet... or finished the faces...

While you're voting, you can check out a fantastic track from the Daytrotter Sessions (original version found on "Friend and Foe")  Vote early and often. (although this in this case, "I'm the decider."... can't believe I quoted Bush... ug.)

UPDATE: I've updated poster number two...

I am says:

Ha. John 'the decider guy'.

I'm going with the top one. The faces are kinda creepy.

Awesome track BTW. I may want to pick up some more. Any recommendations. I'm get a 'Morphine' feel from them. Must be the horns.

Oh yeah. The actual vote would be for the top one. Friends and foes together! (Although one wonders how the bottom one will look when it's finished.)

Other Tags: Burn After Reading, JANET JACKSON, The Cohen Brothers, random

okay... In no particular order... Here's a poster (limited-edition of 100, 3-color silk screen on Green Tea paper)... of Janet Jackson (Janet Jackson? yes. Janet Jackson.) I just finished it and had it printed at this great place called Monolith Printers in Emeryville. I'm very happy with the result ...and I've decided to accompany it with a musical score consisting of British wonderband, Clinic. (Clinic, in case you don't know, wear surgical masks while performing and rule.)

I also got a sneak peek at the brand spanking new Cohen Brothers movie yesterday called "Burn After Reading"... It's really, really good. Great performances all around, but Brad Pitt steals the show with his performance of an idiot weight-trainer at the gym. Hilarious. ...and vintage Cohen Brothers. The movie is definitely worth checking out.

oh... and... parking tickets suck.

That is all.

Can you print more of these without the text and concert info?

I would totally buy one.  I love the green(wo)man feel of it.

Man, can't wait to see that movie.  Love the Coens.  Whenever I'm in doubt about a film of theirs, I remember one of my friends sayings "Even a bad Coen bros. movie is better than most directors best".
