Yesterday, I listened to Weezer’s self-titled debut for the first time in many, many years. It’s still really, really good. Anyways, when the first jangly sounds came through my headphones, I immediately sent my younger brother an email informing him that I was listening to "My Name Is Jonas".
Back in 1994, I spun the hell out of this record, often in my brother’s room while we played one of the greatest video games ever created, NHL ‘94 . My brother too became a fan of the album, primarily of the first track.
The more we listened to the song, the more we became amused by the name in the second verse. We were never really sure what it was, but the way front man Rivers Cuomo sang it had us mimicking him in an increasingly exaggerated manner.
Before I sent my brother the email, I checked a lyrics website to see, finally, who that was in the second verse. The name: Wakefield. It made sense to me. I was hoping for something like "Wingfield" or "Winkfield", but this was fine. I included this information in the message to him.
Today, I received a reply from my brother:
"I thought that it could’ve been ‘Winkfield/Wankfield’, how about WEPEEL? The topic was so intriguing, I checked three websites and all had this Wepeel character. I’m not exactly sure if I have the correct part of the song because I haven’t listened to it in 15 years, but I think I got it right."
This was followed by a copy of the lyrics.
I brought this up with my girlfriend and she also found sites listing "Wepeel".
Now I’ve become intrigued by this mysterious name (not that I don’t believe my brother or girlfriend) and want to find out what you think.
What is the name in the second verse of Weezer’s "My Name Is Jonas"?
The winner receives Rivers’ mustache!
