You know how you’re driving your car and something comes on the radio & you reach your destination but can’t leave the car because you’re glued to the radio. Well, this duo did that to me. Several months ago they were on NPR’s Mountain Stage from West Virginia (It may still be archived) I’d never heard anything like it. Start with Diablo Rojo. That song has been most mentioned by moggers, and for good reason. I’ve been listening to the CD & tonite I watched the Letterman video posted some time back by a mogger. Yeah, truly amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it. The whole self-titled CD is really fine.
In the randomness of life, which I love, I grabbed a past "Sing Out" magazine from the public library shelf the other night & there was an article on Kim & Reggie Harris. Of whom I'd never heard. In a nutshell, they were playing the folk circuit but not getting any break out work - quite possibly because of their color, when they decided to connect with their audiences by singing folk songs of their roots. Ever since, they have been using their talents in this way. In case you feel like honoring MLK you can catch some of this on Rhapsody or their website www.kimandreggie.com
I've been putting off listening to a Brandi Carlile album because of NPR overkill on her. But after hearing "The Story" on the radio last night, I had to give it a try. Okay. So I'm going to break my rule. I don't like to write negative reviews but Brandi, you've got to quit oversinging or you're going to blow your voice out before you take off. Use your break for effect. Don't overkill it. Hit the road and do that night after night and those cracks - well, too many of them's just not good for you. At some point I realized who the other singer was with the cracks, the obvious break, the wonderful falsetto, the huge low voice - K D Lang. Next, I just had to give K D's early albums a listen. Granted early K D is country and Shadowland came out of Nashville, and vocal breaks & jumps are the norm, but she's still singing & going strong. Why? Well, listen to them back to back & you may learn why. Say no more.

Word. Don't know Brandi, but I'll second the longevity of Lang's voice.
