Archie Shepp recorded for Impulse Records from the mid-60's to the early 70's after his friend and mentor John Coltrane helped him secure a recording contract. This disc samples several of the recordings he made during that period, and makes for an excellent overview of his early music, giveing examples of the different facets of music he recorded for Impulse. As posted by me back in February, I've been on an Impulse! tear, and this record was very hard to find until a couple of days ago. Yeah, I got rent and a shitload of bills to pay but as Curtis Armstrong said, "Sometimes you just gotta say fuck it, and take your chances." Plus my woman told me that if I didn't get it, I would've been more miserable than I would've been if it was just rent and bills. It occured to me last night that I could have spent upwards of 40 clams to watch some lemon head pretend he was an ar-teest. Instead I watched a number of my jazz heroes in a grotto, near a pond, in a park in the middle of a city - for free. Yeah, sometimes - maybe always - the best things in life are free. Free as in beer; and free as in speech. Age hasn't tamed these guys. They may have to sit down between solos, but that doesn't stop them from singing ab... MORE

I added a shows widget today. If you look closely, you can probably tell that I work at the Keswick Theatre in lovely downtown Keswick Village, Glenside, PA, USA (just north of Philly). It's a volunteer gig -- work only the shows you want to see. This is a good thing, especially with marginal stuff, because you get to evaluate stuff you may not have otherwise seen.
