Archie Shepp - The Impulse Story

Blog post image preview Archie Shepp recorded for Impulse Records from the mid-60's to the early 70's after his friend and mentor John Coltrane helped him secure a recording contract. This disc samples several of the recordings he made during that period, and makes for an excellent overview of his early music, giveing examples of the different facets of music he recorded for Impulse. Free as in beer; and free as in speech. Age hasn't tamed these guys. They may have to sit down between solos, but that doesn't stop them from singing ab... MORE

I added a shows widget today. If you look closely, you can probably tell that I work at the Keswick Theatre in lovely downtown Keswick Village, Glenside, PA, USA (just north of Philly). It's a volunteer gig -- work only the shows you want to see. This is a good thing, especially with marginal stuff, because you get to evaluate stuff you may not have otherwise seen. I fell in love with the Pennsylvania Ballet's Carmina Burana during a similar gig (one that I worked eve... MORE
