It's no secret that I love lists. I spent most of my childhood making lists of the Top this or the Best that-I probably should have gotten a job as a statistician instead of doing what I do now. I like the forensic aspect of it-particularly in regards to lists about music or pop culture. No two opinions are alike, so there will always be a sense of "How come he's all the way up there?" or "How come she was omitted?"
The latest interesting music list to come our way is... MORE

This is Aretha in 1990 when she was a mature performer.
See if you can pick out Quincy Jones grooving during an audience shot.
Aretha Franklin voiced her displeasure with the Grammy writers and Beyonce for her pre performance piece on Sunday night. Before being joined by Tina Turner, Beyonce recited the following piece
"Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan ... historical women who have performed on this very stage. When I was a little girl I dreamed of being on this stage. But I knew I needed all the right elements. Like the beat of Donna Summer, the spirit of Mahalia Jackson, the jazz of Ella... MORE

There's a new compilation of Aretha duets in stores now, but you can skip that. The real news from Aretha comes on two Atlantic/Rhino releases, one a 2-disc collection of demos and outtakes called "Rare and Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign of The Queen of Soul" (snappy, huh?), and the other a live CD called (again, deep breath) "Oh Me Oh My: Aretha Live in Philly, 1972." One of the highlights of the "Rare..." set is a 1969 B-side, cut in NYC with a stellar l... MORE

Coming home on the train this evening, looking at the cold sparkle of NJ, I was listening to Aretha Franklin's "Somewhere," produced by Quincy Jones, from 1973. Could there be a more perfect day for this track? A quick look around shows that plenty of other people find this track a wonder. But forgive me for taking you on a brief tour. It starts with triumphantly simple piano chords, with which it also ends. Strings start to softly come in as she sings, very slowly and tho... MORE
