Be Your Own Pet have announced that they will break up after the conclusion of their UK tour. The announcement came by way of the bands official Myspace blog, and read as follows: "We are sad to bring you the news that our upcoming shows in the UK (dates below) are going to be our last as a band. We thank you for all your love and support these past few years - its been a blast but the time has come for the 4 of us to go our separate ways." Here are the final shows...... MORE
I'm not a huge fan of these guys, but this video made me laugh the lyrics were so lame yet catchy. Seems frontwoman Jemina Pearl Abegg had a falling out with a BFF she exchanged friendship bracelets with named "Becky," also the name of the song. Crying at lunch, signing yearbooks and friendship bracelets? I wish this song was around when I was in the 7th grade. Hey, at least it's knives and not guns. This might be the last thing you see from these guys. Be You... MORE
Fucking hell. Just as they were starting to hit their groove too. The posted track is in my mind their best, even after it was banned by Universal in a move that may have led to their break up. Bands breaking up before they can legally drink is never a good sign.

Pretty hard to mess up a punk rock song about the holy trilogy of debauchery...and BYOP get it totally right!
It's been more than three months since my last post, so it must be time for a new one. I've been digging on Pandora.com, getting one station fine-tuned. I'm pretty happy with it now; I only have to skip one song every hour or so. It -is- a pretty cool way to discover new songs that you'll probably like. Here are the last Eight songs played: Aint Nothing to Do - Streetwalkin' CheetahsHillmont Avenue - Be Your Own PetTurnaround - NirvanaTrouser Minnow - RapemanFrom Centr... MORE

Like, WTF??? Nashville's noisy youngsters Be Your Own Pet have decided to call it a day. AND their last gig is at Dingwalls. They did play my 2006 gig of the year at the Roadhouse that January, and I do remember playing 'Fire Department' during my time DJing at High Voltage and it being one of the tunes I particularly liked at the time. Never mind eh?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs meets Rilo Kiley.
Good stuff, worth a listen if you like that indie rocker chick-lead stuff. High energy, short songs, definitely enjoyable.
First track suggestion: October, First Account (I heard it on Launchcast, and immediately downloaded the entire album to share with friends.)
A few years ago, I was watching Glastonbury coverage on TV, and I saw this GREAT band, that were playing the John Peel stage, and I though they were aces. The guys had really big hair, and the girl just kicked ass, and I totally forgot what song it was or who they were.
18 months later, I've finally found it - Fire Department by Be Your Own Pet.
Am GUTTED that I missed them at ATP now :(
It's a great track for putting make up on and getting ready to go out.
OK I'll get it over with send all of your hate mail directly to me I can take it. I say Be Your Own Pet last year and thought nothing of them. They were the start of a long billn that included the Kaiser Chiefs, Hot Hot Heat, Futureheads, and Doves. Last night at Emo's here in Austin they played in the small room of Emo's. Watching this band with not a shred of talent (They are on Thurston Moore's label,Ecstatic Peace, and I thing twenty five years of feedback has affe... MORE
If any of you read the recent Pitchfork article. about Rock Camps for Girls, you probably know that BYOP's Jemina Pearl graduated from one of these programs. What P-fork forgot to mention was that she went to the Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp. I've been volunteering with SGRRC for three years now, and I have to say it's one the coolest things I've ever been a part of. Seriously, this is the heart of the Bible Belt and the capitol of country music. It's the last place y... MORE
This is a case of "which is better, the video or the song?" Aw, OK, the song is much better, but the video is just so creative.
