Blog post image preview

Over the weekend, I read a book that wound up costing me nearly three times its cover price, Kingsley Abbott's "500 Lost Gems of the Sixties," a chronicle of not-quite-hit singles (in the U.K.; many of them had great chart success here in the States). Every couple of pages, I stopped to look at iTunes or Amazon to see what tracks are commercially available, and also sought out some alternate means of acquiring some of the more intriguing gems. There are two versions of... MORE

Blog post image preview Way back last September fellow Mogger JohnUncut was lucky enough to catch Brian Wilson's premier of That Lucky Old Sun, the Beach Boys' first album of new material since the revamped SMiLE, at London's Royal Festival Hall. For the album, Wilson worked again with SMiLE lyricist Van Dyke Parks and band member Scott Bennett. The album will be released as a deluxe CD/DVD, as a limited edition vinyl, and the usual ways -- digitally and as a single CD. All hitting the U.... MORE

It occurred to me last night, a minute or so into “Dance Dance Dance”, that I might have been a little blasé about this latest visitation from Brian Wilson and his band. I’ve seen him do “Pet Sounds”, “Smile”, and great further swathes of his gilded back catalogue, and I haven’t seen many better gigs in the past decade. But did I really need to see him do it again? It seems so. There’s a lot of care gone into these shows, clearly, to try and refresh the formula; most not... MORE

Brian Wilson In Reno

Artist:
Other Tags: BEACH BOYS
(23)
Last night went up to Reno to see Brian Wilson, the legendary genius behind the Beach Boys. All things aside, those being overpriced and a cheapish venue, the show was great. I've seen him twice before in concert, and both were probably better shows all around but just seeing him makes me remember how much of an influence he's had on my music tastes. The one thing that never ceases to amaze me is that the music he and the Beach Boys created is still prevalent in today's ... MORE

Brian Wilson Art Exhibit

Blank (6)
Surf’s up! in the coastal town of Cornwall, England where Beach Boy Brian Wilson is the subject of an exhibition at the contemporary art museum, the Tate St. Ives. For “If Everybody Had an Ocean: Brian Wilson: An Art Exhibition,” over thirty artists have compiled paintings, sculptures, installations, photo-text works and films, which view developments in art history and Southern California from the 1960s, when Wilson was a member of the Beach Boys. The exhibit includes... MORE

Blog post image preview A few weeks ago we discussed the best rock biographies on film...it got me thinking about ones that haven't been made. There are some interesting personalities out there whose lives would make a good movie. In particular I think Brian Wilson's life story is funny, tragic and triumphant. I would love to see that story in the hands of a good filmmaker. Any others you can think of?

Tonight. And if the recent setlists are any indication, it looks to be an epic night...dug this up from the message board on his site - it is the running order from about a week ago in Boston... I have heard a lot of mixed things about his shows - everything from "they are sublime" to "kinda sad - he gets confused"...If you've seen him, let me know. No matter what, I am looking forward to Pet Sounds in its entirity...

almost heaven

I went to Boston last friday to see Brian Wilson perform the 40th anniversary of Pet Sounds tour. It was amazing. Al Jardine was there and after Brian played an "acoustic" mini-pre-set with his band, they all spread out over the whole stage and Al came out with his bright blond hair and he and Brian belted out "Please Let Me Wonder" and it sounded great and I got teary. I yelled with excitement and then sat back to watch Al look a little bored through the rest of the first... MORE

Literally moments after posting that previous blog, I stumbled upon this website. It seems to have a plethora of SMiLE stuff. So, for all you Vega-Tables out there. This one's for you. SMiLE.
