They're playing for free tonight at the Walker Art Center for free--followed by a screening of the Manchurian Candidate. Fabulous. My news? I quit my full-time reporting job, but not before I starte... MORE

I don't have many specifics on them, I think Califone is a Chicago band; but I am sure that you will not find more interesting instrumentation.
When I was up at 3:30 this morning putting the finishing touches on a draft, I thought of this song.
I am feeling awfully tired today, but the tune perks me up.

My first-ever review for Harp is up now at the magazine's website. http://www.harpmagazine.com/reviews/cd_reviews/detail.cfm?article_id=4838 It's a review of Califone's Roots & Crowns, a wonderful record that has grown on me steadily since I got it. "The Orchids", which is a Psychic TV cover, is getting all the press, but I might just like the percussion-heavy, hallucenogenic "Pink & Sour" better...depends on the day. Anyway, it's nice to see some hard-core musicians... MORE
I had the distinct pleasure of recording a song with Jim Becker of Califone on Sunday. He recorded a small version of the Roommate band (Erica Dicker on violin, Mercedes Landazuri on banjo, Anton Hatwich on upright bass, Evelyn Weston on saw, me on keytar and vocals) at his apartment to a cassette four-track recorder. I had heard and totally dug some music he recorded this way for my friend Jim Finn's film Interkosmos, but I was still amazed at the depth and fullness of th... MORE
