It's been a long time since Conor Oberst, known to most as Mr. Bright Eyes, played a show in Manchester. Three and half years, to be precise. And all that time I've been waiting for it. Bright Eyes is on hiatus for a little bit, but BE fans fear not: Conor Oberst released his self-titled album on Tuesday.

We all (us hardcore bright eyes fans) knew it was coming, since that leak of a solo show by Conor Oberst showed up earlier this year. But now it's confirmed: Conor Oberst is releasing his first solo album since the early days of Water and Here's To Special Treatment when he was just a kid. Conor Oberst delivers his first album free of the Bright Eyes name since 2004 on Merge Records, and not surprisingly it is of the same quality as any of those releases from his well known moniker. This time working without his long time collaborator Mike Mogis and instead with his assembled Mystic Valley Band (which includes Taylor Hollingsworth) in a quiet part of Mexico. Now 28, Conor Oberst famously began his recording career at the age of 13. Since those early years, his solo career has taken something of a back seat, with most of his material coming as part of various bands, mostly Bright Eyes, whose last release was the well-received Cassadaga from last year. Taking a break from that band, Oberst travelled down to Mexico and through January and February of this year, recorded this self-titled album ...

Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes played at the awesome 249-capacity rock club in San Francisco, Bottom of the Hill. He and his Mystic River Band were incredible. You know how rare it is to be able to hear and understand every word at a rock show? I was a little confused by this record at first, namely why it wasn't coming out on Saddle Creek and why it wasn't under Oberst's Bright Eyes moniker which he's used since 2005. Perhaps that is just it - Oberst was a teenager when he started making Bright Eyes records, and the time has come for something new.
