"...but My Aim is Getting Better."
That's the title of a bookwhich, for want of a better word, i'll call a screwball suspense novel, and it's also the title of the song that the heroine of the book is writing. Sarah Shankman (who has a series of mysteries about reporter Samantha Adams, as well) writes books in which everything ties in sooner or later - usually hysterically. The heroine of this book, Shwelby Kay Tate, is from Mississippi; she's working in Nashville as ... MORE
The Cowboy Junkies return to the scene of the crime and re-record the album that put them on the map. Check out the new version of "I Don't Get It."

Check it out - 20 years after the original was recorded, they've reinterpreted it beautifully all over again with some assistance from Natalie Merchant and Ryan Adams. Loved their version of Sweet Jane 20 years ago, and it so good yet again.

Here's a beautiful (and even playful) cover of Bruce Springsteen's "My Father's House" by The Cowboy Junkies. "Nebraska" is my favorite Springsteen Album, hands down. There is a sparseness and loneliness that pervades every inch of it. Margo Timmins has one of the most effective voices when it comes to subject matter and music such as this.
This is quite an amazing album. Recorded at a time when digital recording was coming to the fore, it's as crystal quiet and winter's night beautiful as anything I've heard. It was recorded live in a church with a single microphone, in one day. It's a mix of covers and original which should be required listening for each of us.
It's a hot, sticky evening in Albuquerque tonight...perhaps made even more so by the fact that my air conditioning is on the fritz and I need to get the apartment people out to have a look at it in the near future. I just got off of the phone with D. not long ago and am chillin' as best as I can for now with a glass of wine and the Cowboy Junkies beautifully covering one of my all-time favourite Grateful Dead songs...check it out and lemme know what you think. :-)
This weekend brings the Newport Folk Festival, and Nat’l Public Radio will be streaming many of the performances live from the not-that-folky concert. This year, the Festival added acts not normally known as folk performers, so listen for sets from Richie Havens, Cowboy Junkies, Steve Earle, and Jakob Dylan (whose dad Bob got booed there in [...]

As a latecomer to the whole iTunes thing, I've just finally started uploading my music collection over the past few weeks. And tonight, I finally hit the 1,000 song milestone! (Only 20,000 more to go....) The song that did it: The Cowboy Junkies' "Misguided Angel." Hm...does that mean my use of iTunes is misguided, too? I don't think so...in fact, after resisting it for so long, I'm surprised at how much fun I'm having with it. For the first time in years, I'm rediscov... MORE
Hey there all, I don't yet have an iPod - so I really don't have a "digital" music collection, but that doesn't make me any less of a lover of music. Hope to get to know many of you. As you can see by my MOGname, I am an unparalleled fan of the Cowboy Junkies. My daughter played the CD Lay it Down for me years ago - and that was it - I was hooked. Picked up every single album they had out to date. Try to see them whenever they're playing nearby. So, I look forward ... MORE
