Ever made the same mix for seven people? This happened to me with a Christmas mix I decided to send out as a card one year. But once I got to mix six, iTunes revolted saying I couldn't make another mix using Run DMC's "Christmas Is," a song I had purchased on the site. Bummer, considering it really was a nice segue to Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree." I thought to myself, "What the heck!" iTunes is controlling my mix-making powers! This song is one of the songs they play pretty much every night at the diner/bar I work at here in Spokane. The best thing is that pretty much everyone knows the words to this song, so everyone in the building is singing along. It sort of restores my faith in music and people, seeing everyone having a good time rocking out to classic Green Day. No one cares that they're "mainstream" and no one cares whether or not they "sold out". Everyone just loves it and loves Green Day... MORE

Green Day have pretty much taken Bono’s role in world domination. Not only did they appear on the season finale of American Idol this past Wednesday, helping their single and John Lennon cover “Working Class Hero” jump eleven spots to Number Fourteen on the Modern Rock chart. Green Day's contribution to the John Lennon cover album, Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur, is a version of "Working Class Hero." The album is part of a campaign by Amnesty International to mobilize millions around the urgent catastrophe in Darfur, Sudan.

Green Day told me they were covering John Lennon's classic "Working Class Hero" a couple months ago but then Billie hustled off to New Orleans to help build homes for people displaced by Katrina-- the ones, unlike Trent Lott, who the Bush Regime never got to. It's coming out on May 30, on a benefit album for Amnesty International, INSTANT KARMA. The Bush Regime isn't doing much to save the folks in Darfur either so the proceeds from INSTANT KARMA will help out with that. A... MORE

Green Day's version of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" will debut today on iTunes, MTV, MTV2, mtvU, mtv.com and mtvu.com, according to Green Day's official website. The group performed the song live on "American Idol" last week. The video is directed by Sam Bayer (Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"; Blind Melon's "No Rain"; Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," all the videos for Green Day's 2004 LP American Idiot, Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around.... There are a couple of newer songs I am listening to right now. One is Green Day's "Working Class Hero" and the other is Sum 41's "Underclass Hero." It strikes me that the names of these songs, both by pop punk rock bands, are so similar. I'm sure Sum 41 would love to be like Green Day, and I wonder whether these bands actually like (or know) each other. That title requires a certain level of clarification, and I shall deliver it by regaling you with a story. I was listening to the radio (KROQ in Los Angeles) a few weeks back when they had a segment on which bands do you immediately turn the radio off upon hearing them. I thought it was an interesting topic, although one that could have the hidden agenda of trying to cull the herd of radio play music on the station without upsetting too many fans, but whatever. Though through the accidents of birth I came only belatedly to the Beatles, even so Paul was my Beatle and I had no heart for John which perhaps was for the good as it saved me the heartbreak of his violent bearing away. I do not say his death for how could such a spirit die.
