Guided By Voices Monday

Artist:
Album:
Track: ...The Best of Jill Hives
(14)
Blog post image preview
I feel like Guided By Voices this fine Monday... ...and I get the feeling I might feel like this every Monday into the distant future... ...here's a couple "must listens"... First up, from "Earthquake Glue," a doozy called "The Best of Jill Hives"... (Robert Pollard, lead singer/songwriter/all-round guru, apparently got the title to this song while snoozing while watching TV... what might have been "Days of our Lives" turned into the "Best of Jill Hive... Blog post image preview Cold hands touching my face Don’t hide - the snake can see you Old friends you might not remember Fading away from you These faithful words emanated from a scratchy piece of vinyl, weighted down by a copper penny in its fidelity. Guided by Voices "Bee Thousand" is one of those seminal records, where one can place their exact whereabouts, setting our chronometers to the wistful days of 1994. Summer exactly; living in a dilapidated green house with four other d... MORE

New Mog - Will the Wormhole! survive?

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Other Tags: Wormhole! mix tape game, is mog worm free?
(14)
I'm offering up a game of Wormhole! to test out this whole new Mog layout. Heck I don't even know if posting songs in the comments is available anymore - and that's the crux of Wormhole! I would watch the video and learn all about the NEW Mog, but then what would I do at work tomorrow. I offer to you a meatball of a starter: Mose Allion's "Back Country Suite: Blues (AKA Young Man Blues)"... MORE

I have Dzendvokh to thank for helping me figure out how to construct a little game out of posting a song on Mog and exploiting the comments section. Here are the rules I've flushed out so far, and are apt to change, seeing how it plays out with participation of you, fellow moggers! I haven't figured out how to make this competitive or points oriented, rather it works as a social networking game that players work together to build a mix.
The thinking that goes behind a ga... MORE

Criminally Overlooked: GUIDED BY VOICES

Artist:
Other Tags: Robert Pollard, GBV, The Who
(26)
Blank (9)
Blog post image preview . . There's no need to reach all the way back to the 60s or 70s to discover a band with as much power and melody as The Who... . This generation has GUIDED BY VOICES. . Born and nurtured in the Lo-Fi nest... sounding like a slightly British garage band, but hailing from Dayton, Ohio, GBV ripped through two decades... leaving empty beer bottles and brilliant tunes in their wake. . The heart of GBV is Robert Pollard. The former school teacher turned tunesmith seems to have an ... MORE

As I Listen...

(10)
To GbV's Alien Lanes I realize just how used I am to stereo sound and how many possibilites can be opened by using monoaural. Bob Pollard's band managed to bring together a sound that is typical to Mid-Western alt bands like The Replacements, but in addition he managed to give it that casual off-the-cuff air that makes their music so interesting.... 'You know I hate to be around her...when she's like that'

(25)
Ever have somebody in your life that you were just absolutely head over heels in love with...but they could just never get their demons in check? And you left because you had to...not because you wanted to...I did. I think about her from time time...and what could have been.I hope she's doing well...this song speaks to relationships like that better than I ever could. 'One day I will know it's a waste of time...and there's a better road ahead of me...I just don't ho... MORE

Guided by Voices for better productivity

Artist:
Album:

Blog post image preview Sometimes when I am resistant to working, I put on a playlist of long songs alternating with this one song which is exactly 2 minutes long. During the short song, I get to take a break. When the next long song starts I get to switch to a different task. This is a way of bargaining with procrastination, which is sometimes helpful as a self-employed person. I think this is a pretty perfect break song: My Valuable Hunting Knife, by Guided by Voices. It kicks right of... MORE
