As my legions of devoted readers will have noticed by now, I've abandoned my project of writing a tribute to each of my favorite rock bands. I came across this song by accident, having not seen Punch Drunk Love, in which it is featured, and I fell in love with it... lyrics and music alike. OK, all you Jon Brion fans (for the uninitiated, Jon is an extremely talented musician / producer who has been responsible for the best recordings of Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, The Mommyheads, etc. etc. - lately doing a lot of soundtracks) I have several bootlegs by the Grays and Jon Brion, and this is one of my favorite tracks that he has never officially released. i believe he's lying on a KING size bed of american major/indie scene. tho his musical history was like a long winding road.when he was a teenager, formed a punk/powerpop band called The Bats.they released a 7inch called "popgun" and a full album called "how pop can you get?" from connecticut's indie label gustav records around '82. they sound like cheap trick plays the ELO songs. amazing songwriting, it would blow ben folds' mind away.and it's my all time favourite powerp... I don't want to be another music geek who fawns over the Genius of Jon Brion. I want you to be. If you don't already know his music, think again. A prolific writer and producer, he did for Aimee Mann what Tarantino did for Travolta. He's produced songs & albums for Robyn Hitchcock, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, Kanye West, Brad Mehldau, The Crystal Method, Evan Dando and most recently for Spoon's new album. I know, I know. Don't start something unless you're going to follow through with it, right? I'm sorry. I'll try not to be so lazy. It's just that I've been so busy playing Starcraft, lately.
The other day, I downloaded Jon Brion's only record, "Meaningless." I love it. It's so over-produced and catchy and slick. I wish Jon Brion would work on more solo stuff, but I can understand that he's pressed for time, being an award-winning producer and score composer and all.

Do you guys have any friends who just make you jealous constantly? There's a girl I know, who's very sweet, but gives me maddening fits of jealousy sometimes because her dad is apparently some producer/music exec, and she's constantly in studios and seeing bands; not to mention that I'm trying to become a music producer, and I try to subtly hint to her that I would love her dad's help with connections, but she's either politely ignoring me or not getting it.Aaaaanyways, y... I remember the first time I saw Jon Brion perform at Largo (a small club in L.A.), the room was packed with music aficionados all waiting patiently for the virtuoso. I was on my second gin and tonic when out of the corner of my eye he appeared. Cinema and music. A combination made in heaven, up there with peanut butter and jelly, and chocolate and peanut butter, and peanuts and peanut butter. When a score works with a film to amplify a theme or elevate mood it can be a transcendent device. True, I'm not fully versed in the cannon of score composers but there's nothing that connects to me more than the work of Jon Brion.
