I saw him on copacabana beach new years 2002/3...it was so cool to see him live and in front of what must have been millions of brazillians. To them, of course, he's a national (but especially to Rio) icon perhaps what a Paul Simon is to NY...had so much fun at that show: moro, no pais tropical!!!
but I didn't hear umabarauma, xica da silva, or any stuff from africa brasil. at least I don't think I did...

World Cup fever has gotten me all revved up about '60s Brazilian music again. It helped that Brazil finally put on a spectacle today against Japan (why do I even know that? I am not usually a sports fan). Even these Nike 'Joga Bonita' ads stoked the fires. The soundtrack to 10-year-old Ronaldinho sounds a lot like Pipoca Moderna by Gilberto Gil (not the same song... and probably actually a whole genre that I don't know the name of).
