Low breakdown....again?

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Oh man. Along with David Foster Wallace, now this. Clearly Alan Sparhawk is wrangling with his demons.  From stage at the End of the Road, on Mic, he was heard as follows: "All the people I love,' declared frontman Alan Sparhawk last night, "told me they hated me today." and this: Sparhawk didn't seem to listen though, and as his band's mardy-but-ace set came to a close, he started spinning round in a circle and eventually let go of his guitar, sending it arcing, hammer... Low - You May Need A Murderer

Stream the documentary, by Dutch tv/documentary maker David Kleijwegt, here. I found the pacing, the performances and the confessional nature of this portrait of Low (mainly Alan Sparhawk) really engaging. Mimi usually fades to the background unless she's singing in performance. Her candor in this documentary reveals her personality and her qualities that probably keep Sparhawk somewhat grounded. From the VPRO site: "During 2007 David Kleijwegt filmed the legendary c... MORE

Here are some discs which can be found under the diamond of my gramophone.

Of course, the laser-beam has long replaced the needle of my turntable which more likely than not has a scroll wheel.

This is one of my favorite low albums. More of an e.p. in light of their, usually, hour long releases. It's six songs, 35 or so minutes. The songs range from a string-backed standard Low song, which is quite nice, to a more minimal Kranky-like compositions. The first cut, Will the Night, is rather short with a vocals-as-instrument treatment, very droney. Lot's of guitar noise. Quiet guitar noise, mind you. Check it out.

When I Go Deaf

I love this song, this whole record in fact. Low's 'The Great Destroyer' album is one of those seminal albums in my life...it has just etched a certain space out in my soul...and I will take it with me for the rest of my life. I probably have 10 or 15 albums that have had that affect on me...maybe. So, every couple of weeks I like to share a track off of one of those...

New Low Video Off Drums And Guns

Artist:
Album:
Track:
The Minnesota quiet-rock trio Low have a new video, directed by Marc Gartman, out for "Breaker," a song off their latest album, Drums And Guns. One could interpret the video as an anti-war statement. In the video, front man/vocalist/guitarist Alan Sparhawk is seen wearing an army jacket, sitting at a table, stuffing his face with cake. Check it out: http://www.subpop.com/features/breaker/

I am so happy that I am finally gong to get to see Low...a band that I had resigned myself to never seeing since they never, ever came to Columbus. They make such beautiful records...i am really curious to see how it translates live... Here is the alternate version of 'Hatchet' off of their gorgeous album, 'Drums And Guns'

It's been a long time since I've posted anything up here! Hi MOG friends. (Do I still have any MOG friends?) I've been real busy working on the next Roommate album and some other projects. I won't post any samples of the album yet, but I did perform one of its tracks on the U. of Texas' KVRX radio station the day after playing at the ridiculous circus that is SXSW, and I've posted the recording here. The album version has the drum machine beats in this version plus real ... MORE

Blog post image preview The first thing that Low would like you to know is that you're going to die. And not in a sentimental, cushy, "Do You Realize?" sort of way, either. Your body will break and your blood will spill and spill. Throughout the length of Drums & Guns, the fantastic new offering from the band, we're constantly reminded of our own mortality. Amid sparse instrumentation and the simplest of drum machine loops, the band doesn't seem interested in comforting us with the lyrical imager... MORE

Low, "Drums & Guns"

Artist:
Album:

Everybody’s favorite slo-core minimalists are back with a beautiful, intense, politically-relevant album called Drums and Guns, out last week on Sub Pop. Here’s a bit from my Dusted review: “Drums and Guns has a sparse, understated beauty to it, electronically-generated rhythms under otherworldly harmonies, and subtle violence buried in the words. It's dark, lovely and slow to blossom, but leaves an impression once it does. Here are uneasy beauties, shot with anxiety b... MORE
