Mike's post about getting over some music and growing appreciation for previously dismissed works jarred my brain. For one, I used to like Pearl Jam. I know that is not a revelation but it really ended up being the antithesis of my tastes not too far after they debuted in 1991 or so. But still, that video of Alive with the alternate guitar solo at the end can still give me tingles - I do not fall out of love easily.
PJ seems to be a theme lately, Charley used a nice t... MORE
I have a certain affinity for the Funkadelic song "Maggot Brain". I think it could possibly be one of the best guitar solos in rock history, if not the best. I mean it can stand next to anything Hendrix wrote, it's that good.
Funny thing is, the first time I heard it, I actually heard the rather impressive cover by J. Mascis on the Mike Watt album Ball Hog or Tug Boat - an album I don't remember too much, except for that track. I later learned it was a cover and eventu... MORE

Mike Watt - is probably not a common household name. But for some of us who do know of him, he's, of course, best known as a key figure of the punk music movement in the 80s. Since then, he has racked up a ridiculously long list of shows played, and numerous recordings. His work, his passion, his life, is tirelessly devoted to music, his own and others that he comes in contact with. He has a reputation for being humble, modest, and accessible. For the past year, I set out ... MORE
Last Sunday April 13 2008, I was invited to be on his show - twfps.com.
We were just b.s.ing about all kinds of things, much of it was to do with the latest recording he did with his Black Gang last week (footage shown in my last post.)
Check it out, if you care to know more about what this album means to him. And of course, discover some unknown bands from all over the place, while you are at it.
Guilt By Association is a new compilation, due to be released by Engine Room Recordings on August 7th, 2007 in the States, that will showcase your favorite indie bands covering their favorite "songs-they-would-normally-be-embarrased-to-admit-they-like-without-a-record-deal" songs. From the album's official murdochspace page:
Have you ever felt embarrassed listening to one-hit wonders or pop gems of yesteryear? Fear not. Your favorite Indie superstars are giving the OK by... MORE
I always kinda wanted a Telecaster bass (not the ones that have P-bass shape, but an actual Tele shape - singlecut), so my eBay gremlin watches out for them for me.
This came up in gremlin results and looks like a really gorgeous bass for them what wants to drop the coin on it, or them what loves the Mike Watt.
Mike Watt turned fifty on the 22nd, and I wanted to send out a hearty happy birthday to him. This probably is not insightful. Yet pretty much every indie rock kid who has the pleasure of talking to Mike experienced something instructional about this person (and there are a lot of indie rock kids who Mike Watt has talked with). What I learned was that being talented and having an inability to empathize with humans are absolutely not connected, and he is thriving proof of... MORE

a post by a guy named Waydutch done reminded me of the greatness that was fIREHOSE, and of course, Mike "Watt" Watt.
Nothing too expository, just some full-on Watty goodness.
Turn it up.
fIREHOSE- Down With the Bass
Watt- Piss-Bottle Man
