Mike's post about getting over some music and growing appreciation for previously dismissed works jarred my brain. For one, I used to like Pearl Jam. I know that is not a revelation but it really ended up being the antithesis of my tastes not too far after they debuted in 1991 or so. But still, that video of Alive with the alternate guitar solo at the end can still give me tingles - I do not fall out of love easily.

I have a certain affinity for the Funkadelic song "Maggot Brain". I think it could possibly be one of the best guitar solos in rock history, if not the best. I mean it can stand next to anything Hendrix wrote, it's that good.

Mike Watt - is probably not a common household name. But for some of us who do know of him, he's, of course, best known as a key figure of the punk music movement in the 80s. I always kinda wanted a Telecaster bass (not the ones that have P-bass shape, but an actual Tele shape - singlecut), so my eBay gremlin watches out for them for me.
This came up in gremlin results and looks like a really gorgeous bass for them what wants to drop the coin on it, or them what loves the Mike Watt.

Although Mike Watt is booked for the Stooges tour through mid-September, He remains busy with his many side=projects. First there's his collaboration with with Go! Team guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Kaori Tsuchida, Funanori. The duo EP, called A Tiny Twofer, features the Tokyo band LITE and artwork by Watt pal Raymond Pettibon. Mike Watt turned fifty on the 22nd, and I wanted to send out a hearty happy birthday to him. This probably is not insightful. Yet pretty much every indie rock kid who has the pleasure of talking to Mike experienced something instructional about this person (and there are a lot of indie rock kids who Mike Watt has talked with). There's something awesome about having something pop up on 'shuffle' that you forgot you even had loaded on yer iPod ... Today's blow-my-mind track is Mike Watt's "Max and Wells" from the Ball Hog or Tugboat? album --- an awesome slinky bass throb coupled with searing J Mascis guitar work and gravely Mark Lanegan vocals.
