For my next installment of Vintage B-sides/Outtake Classics comes one of the best songs, never officially released, about Los Angeles. Rilo Kiley's "I Love L.A." A staple of their live shows, this is a song my good friend Cate was searching for. I found this version online. I Love L.A. best describes the City of Angels that I love so much. It's been over two years since I moved out here from Chicago and I never thought I'd take to this glorious city like I have. L.A.'s... MORE
It's 8:30 in the morning, and I'm woken up by a text message. I ignore it and go back to sleep. An hour later, I wake up to check it. The text is from my friend who works with me at a vegetarian restaurant in a quiet suburb of LA. "Jenny Lewis is sitting at table 11!!!!!" it reads. Jenny Lewis? THE Jenny Lewis? I call my work as I scramble to throw on some clothes, while thinking to myself "What Would Jenny Lewis Wear?" One of the girls picks up who is also a HUGE Rilo Ki... MORE
Here's the short of it. Went to see Rilo Kiley last night. After a less than inspiring set from opener Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Blake Sennet came on stage to ask if we minded listening to a few new tracks written by some friends of the band. We screamed no, so he said, "Please welcome GILLIAN WELCH and DAVE RAWLINGS!!!" I for one about died. Screamed. Jumped up and down so much I nearly fell out of my little strappy sandals. As these were new songs, I cannot provi... MORE
Oh man, I've been wanting to throw this out there for a few days, I'm surprised no one else has. If they did and I missed it, I humbly apologize. These lyrics are strangely comforting to me. Just saying them back to myself while Jenn-eee sings them like some scorned horny little elf just makes me feel all warm inside. Odd.
And the grass it was a ticking
and the sun was on the rise
i never felt so wicked
as when i willed our love to die.
Thoughts?
First time to see Rilo Kiley. Loved the way that Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett complement each other. Jenny has such an artistic and free flowing sense with her voice and her arms and her body and how she plays the music. Blake Sennett has the more tightly wound slightly geeky vibe, but truly good geek! They played a nice mix of their newest songs from Under the Blacklight and also some treasures from the past which were great sing along options for the audience. The ... MORE
Earlier this week, I thought my love for Rilo Kiley couldn't grow any more. Then I saw them for the second time at the Rio, and now I'm more enamored than ever. My pictures turned out shitty, but I don't even care. The whole experience was amazing and I was in the front to experience it all. Blake looked a little annoyed and the Blake/Jenny playfulness was definitely lacking. The band said they really enjoyed Santa Cruz though, which is always nice to hear. For some ... MORE
