As the smoke was rising it got beat by the unstable wobble of the ceiling fan. "Off balance blades." I thought. One of these days that is coming down on my head. My heart kept time with the spinning. I tasted the metal in my own blood and had a dull muffed noise in the back of my head. Staggering to get up I couldn't help but notice there were parts of me missing. "Oh man, this is what happens when you get hit by a truck?" The impact isn't so bad but the roll under is w... MORE
Piggybacking Deadmandeadman's recent spat of Sonic Youth live posts with this one off the Dirty Boots maxi single that featured a bunch of live tracks. Noticeably it is a pretty good recording compared to other SY live/bootlegs that I have heard. I wonder if at this time when grunge was blowing up and Geffen was falling all over the "godfathers of grunge" if some type of live album was not in the mix for a minute or two? Pure speculation. Enjoy...
This performance, from 1987, finds Sonic Youth in extraordinary form. The sound quality is a bit rough, but this is scorched earth anti-rock. Yet for all it's ragged edges there's a cetain pastoral element to the musique concrete interludes, an odd serenity at the eye of the hurricane they create. Sonic Youth live can be an exhilerating trip.
We jump ahead here to 1993. Their sound, while more nuanced, has lost none of it's edge. In fact it may be sharper now, more spiked & wild within frameworks that are growing closer (by millimeters) to a "mainstream" rock orientation.

At L.A.'s El Rey Theatre in 2003, the year after the release of Murray Street, I saw Sonic Youth play, amidst a full set, a song from that album called "Karenology." (It's called "Karen Revisited" on the tracklist; they've since retitled it.) Murray Street uses a relatively subdued palette for a band known for its tende... MORE
Sonic Youth just don't know when to stop do they? And that's a good thing for us. At last week's McCarren Pool in Brooklyn, the indie-rock legends played the last show ever there by opening with two new songs. The songs are so new that they neither have titles nor lyrics. Though Thurston Moore explained to crowd that the band had just began writing material for their new album a few days ago, hence the lack of lyrics, the audience treated the brand new songs as though they... Earlier today, I hopped in my '96 Jeep Grand Cheroke to purchase some extra cans of spray-on popcorn ceiling texture paint (2 square feet costs $10!). The minute I opened the door, I knew something was wrong. My between-the-seat glove compartment was open. There was a roll of packing tape on the driver's seat. The sunglass compartment (is that what you call it?) was hanging open just overtop of the front seats. My checkbook (yes, I left my checkbook in my unlocked car... MORE

Well, I don't think many people saw THAT happening.- Sonic Youth
After much speculation and cries of "Sell out!", it turns out that Sonic Youth have signed a deal with Matador Records, across the UK and US. Having reached the end of their Universal deal, there was plenty of rumour about who the legendary New Yorker's would sign too next and whether they'd give in to "THE MAN". A statement from the band reads, "Having fulfilled their contractual obligations ... ... MORE

I had been waiting for this one for a while. Discovering that New York City's own - the legendary Sonic Youth - were going to be playing a live free concert at Battery Park in downtown NYC as part of seminal college radio station WFMU's 50th anniversary (and the RiverToRiver festival that has been ongoing throughout the summer) I knew I had to attend. So, filling out the necessary online applications (you still had to have a ticket to get in, even though it was free), I... MORE

Wow, wow, wow! After a tip from Mr. Thurston himself late August (TMT News), it looks like Sonic Youth have officially signed with Matador Records. According to a post on the label's Matablog:
After rampant speculation, Matador Records can confirm the label will be releasing a new studio album from Sonic Youth sometime in 2009. Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group, Sonic Youth recently reached an agreement with Matador to rele... MORE
