Remember "Don't back date it...."
Talk Talk. If you came of age in the 80s, you probably best remember them as a "new wave" band - their video for "It's My Life" had to be one of the most-played vids on MTV back when they actually still showed videos. (Let's not even get into the No Doubt version.) I always liked their stuff, but never sought it out or even bought any of their singles or albums. But as my taste in music expanded as I grew older, I began hearing and reading raves about their album "Spirit ... MORE
One of my favorite songs! Listen to the wonderful counter-melodies between the vocals and the bass over the behind the beat, "in the groove" drums and minimalistic organ and guitar perfectly mixed and produced.
I would have loved to see this performed live!
So yes, of course I've been getting a couple of CDs that follow the whole post-rock/post-metal genre, like Pelican's "The Fire In Our Throats...", Cult of Luna's "The Beyond", The End's "Elementary", Giant Squid's "Metridium Field", Tortoise's "Millions Now...", as well as the new Explosions In The Sky & Jesu. But lo and behold when I looked at my copy of Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock", there are a couple of pinholes in the fucker! CD ROT! AIIIIIEEEEEE. Thank God that the CD... MORE
Back in the summer of 1984, I began to transcend my silly Duran Duran, Billy Idol-lovin' ways to get into some more interesting music of a similar bent thanks to a Chicago television station that had just launched and didn't really have any programming yet. Instead of shows, they played videos that set me down the path to the still-exciting world of unpopular pop music that I love. Back then, MTV had exclusive rights to the videos by many top 40 artists, so the station i... MORE
Here is the video for Talk Talk, "Life's What You Make It". It is just a bad ass song, and the video does it justice.
Every since catching this video on VH1 Classics sometime around 2000 or 2001, I have searched everything I could to find it, earlier this year I discovered how badass youtube really is. The band itself is quite amazing, I enjoy a few songs by them, that is a rare occurence when talking about a band from the '80s. The video keeps me mezmerized and the lyrics keep me thinking. Oh how I wish I could've been around in the '80s, my wardrobe would resemble something from this... MORE
Don't forget....We REALLY are suppossed to be SHARING the planet. It's not ALL OURS. I was so moved by this video. Honestly....this is NOT the kind of music I normally listen to. But.....I saw this video and I was blown away. I know you younger kids relate top the more modern version and interpretation of this song,.... It's a great pop tune just as a tune. I was kind of insulted by the new interpretation. But that's just me. Interpretations is what fandom ... MORE
One of my all time favorite albums. Came out between my Senior year in high school and Freshman year at college (1988). Opened my mind to so called "alternative" music :-) There was nothing like it, that I knew of anyway, at the time....really have never heard anything quite like it since. It was even more surprising to me because I had thought that previous Talk Talk music was much more new wavey dance type music. Simply an amazing album and one that everyone should ... MORE
Ever have one of those days where you're bummed and need the right music to fit? Not romantically bummed, because everybody knows the best musical cure for the romantic bum-out is Sade. More like, bummed out in the soul, over it, not feeling it, feeling like your guts are all hanging out and your skin is missing. Talk Talk is a lot of things, but I never thought they might be emotionally soothing. But if you're on that page, get Laughing Stock, their last album. It's... MORE
