Yes, prior to the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed was a recording artist. He went by a slightly more formal name, and his musical wares were as conventional as conventional gets. In "Your Love" he lavishes the attention on "your love" he would later invest in the subject of scary, scary ol' heroin. I'm going to level with you. To anyone at all familiar with the Velvet Underground, or with The Velvet Underground and Nico, there is no way that my review is going to be comprehensive enough, or even good enough, to re-articulate to you why this album is one of the greatest rock-n-roll works that mankind will ever produce. 1. Buffy Sainte-Marie, "God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot." What she brings to mind probably depends on when you were born. In the early-60s, she was the earnest Native American folkie with the vibrato in her vocals ... in the 70s she was a semi-regular on Sesame Street (the video link, not a song, comes from that show). Here's an update on the apartment situation I was panicking about in yesterday's posts. I finally got to speak to Chris' super. It turned out things aren't as bad as I feared, they cleaned out the apartment but boxed everything. I told him to toss or donate Chris' clothing (sigh... his mother doesn't want it and it would make shipping so much more expensive) and box everything for shipping, also promised to send him the $$ as soon as he had a figure for me. yes this is part two of my breakfast and music set. the first album I listen to in the morning tends to set the tone for the day so today I'm in slightly nostalgic mello mood with under tones of regret and surface happiness. the steak and eggs were excellent.

They lasted only 5 years, 1967 - 1972. They never found a mainstream audience despite the presence of two of the more creative and innovative artists of their day, John Cale and Lou Reed. At one point they were actually managed by Andy Warhol. Brian Eno once said “Sure, the first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but of those ten thousand people, every last one of them went out and formed a band”.
