It must be Rock And Roll Wednesday. The "turn it up!" kids are out on the street: too tall, too skinny, too much black, too many bangles, too much hair styling, all rocking the music on their t-shirts. In five minutes of walking I see:

Sonic Youth logo
T-Rex logo
A Sounds magazine cover from 1976 featuring Thin Lizzy
First Joy Division cover (a day not seeing that is a day you spend at home)
Led Zeppelin US Tour 1975 (ditto)
A Germs Starwood poster (liquid nitrogen cool, that on... MORE

Blog post image preview A good example of the multi-media head trip that was Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable is viewable in the form of a film by Ronald Nameth over at Ubu.com Here's a quote of some of the info cited about this performance: "Music: The Velvet Underground & Nico, I'll Be Your Mirror and European Son from The Velvet Underground & Nico LP and It Was a Pleasure Then from Nico's Chelsea Girl LP, and two live songs from the Exploding Plastic Inevitable at Poor Richard's...    Yes, prior to the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed was a recording artist.   He went by a slightly more formal name, and his musical wares were as conventional as conventional gets.  In "Your Love" he lavishes the attention on "your love" he would later invest in the subject of scary, scary  ol' heroin.   By the time he'd worked out the Velvets business plan, Lou the vocalist had abandoned "notes"  and "keys"  and all that fancy music theory stuff,  but evidence exists th... The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico

(20)
Blog post image preview I'm going to level with you. To anyone at all familiar with the Velvet Underground, or with The Velvet Underground and Nico, there is no way that my review is going to be comprehensive enough, or even good enough, to re-articulate to you why this album is one of the greatest rock-n-roll works that mankind will ever produce. I do feel, however, that we lucky and (probably) rabid fans need to, from time to time, re-transmit this information back to those not in the know, so ... MORE

Free music video of After Hours (5)
1. Buffy Sainte-Marie, "God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot." What she brings to mind probably depends on when you were born. In the early-60s, she was the earnest Native American folkie with the vibrato in her vocals ... in the 70s she was a semi-regular on Sesame Street (the video link, not a song, comes from that show). She was once married to a surfer dude, she has a Ph.D., and in 1969, she recorded this oddball album which was almost entirely constructed out of synthesized v... MORE

Blog post image preview Here's an update on the apartment situation I was panicking about in yesterday's posts. I finally got to speak to Chris' super. It turned out things aren't as bad as I feared, they cleaned out the apartment but boxed everything. I told him to toss or donate Chris' clothing (sigh... his mother doesn't want it and it would make shipping so much more expensive) and box everything for shipping, also promised to send him the $$ as soon as he had a figure for me. (Yeah I'm... MORE

steak eggs and velvet underground

(8)

yes this is part two of my breakfast and music set. the first album I listen to in the morning tends to set the tone for the day so today I'm in slightly nostalgic mello mood with under tones of regret and surface happiness. the steak and eggs were excellent.

Pale Blue Eyes

Blog post image preview They lasted only 5 years, 1967 - 1972. They never found a mainstream audience despite the presence of two of the more creative and innovative artists of their day, John Cale and Lou Reed. At one point they were actually managed by Andy Warhol. Brian Eno once said “Sure, the first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but of those ten thousand people, every last one of them went out and formed a band”. Obviously an exaggeration but it's not an exaggeration to sa... MORE

November 28 = Velvet Revolution

Album:

On November 28, 1989, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia announced that it would relinquish its power and dismantle the single-ruling-party method of governing that nation. The decision came on the day after the Czech citizenry staged a 2-hour general strike, causing everything to come to a screeching halt. Since November 16 of that year, the nation was overcome with a series of peaceful protests and work stoppages. People had the power indeed. A month later, the a... MORE

Blog post image preview Listening to music at work always reminds me of that line from high fidelity; "Which came first — the music or the misery? Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?" The atmosphere at work can be either salvaged by, say some Camera Obscura, Vampire Weekend, the Shins even (is it just me or do they sound really chipper these days?). Just as easily though it’s brought down by something melancholic or overly emotive- or i... MORE
