Two years ago, it was probably "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. Last year, it was probably "1234" by Feist or "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John. What is the most overplayed song of this year? I suspect many of us don't frequent the traditional forms of mainstream music too often- Top 40 radio, iTunes Top 10 singles, MTV Music Awards, Forever 21, The Limited, Gap, The Mall..., but there are other ways to hear certain songs over and over...and over again. Behold the powers of the mandolin! You gotta love how the instrument can turn the Racontuers pseudo honky-tonk romp "Old Enough" into a full-fledge bluegrass number. Ever since I heard Trouble, RL's signature hit, I've been addicted. Who has a voice like this? No one. And who in contemporary music sounds like him? No one. I addition to have mind-blowing talent, he's reached an atmospherically ridiculous level of originality. That being said, I haven't purchased the album yet. But, I did manage to snag this song. The Interiors , of Chicago, released their debut LP this summer, garnering rave reviews from the Washington Post to the Chicago Tribune. In a nutshell, they are self-described as having an avant pop (Pixies, REM, Sonic Youth, etc) base but owing just as much to the tradition of R B interpreters in the lineage of Presley, Stones, Talking Heads, etc. I'd call 'em straight up solid .
